The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating a fatal accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck in Chambers County, Texas. The accident marks the first reported fatality associated with the Cybertruck.
The crash occurred on August 5, 2024, in the Baytown area of Chambers County. According to local media reports, the Cybertruck veered off the road for an unknown reason, collided with a concrete culvert, and subsequently caught fire. The sole occupant of the vehicle, the driver, was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the victim, and the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
In response to the incident, the NHTSA announced that it is seeking more information from Tesla regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash. Although the agency has not yet opened a formal investigation, it is gathering data to determine whether further action is warranted. (via Reuters)
This includes looking into the cause of the fire after the crash and whether any technical or mechanical failures contributed to the accident.
Tesla first released the Cybertruck late last year. Based on several recalls it is estimated that approximately 15,000 have been delivered since late November last year. Tesla has yet to bring the Cybertruck to Canada, but in response to Drive Tesla, the company said it is still hoping to get approval from Transport Canada to begin the first deliveries this year.
