Tesla seems poised to deliver strong results in the domestic Chinese market this third quarter. In the week of August 5-11, 2024 — the sixth week of Q3 2024 — Tesla China saw 15,500 new vehicle registrations. This represents a 24% week-over-week improvement from the 12,500 vehicles that were registered in the week ending August 4.
Tesla China does not report its weekly domestic sales figures, but a general idea of the electric vehicle maker’s performance in the local Chinese automotive market can be inferred by tracking the company’s vehicle registrations. Fortunately, these registrations are closely tracked by industry insiders in China. Even automakers such as Li Auto have taken it upon themselves to report weekly sales figures regularly.
And as per Li Auto’s recent report, Tesla China saw 15,500 registrations in the week ending August 11, 2024. Industry watchers on social media noted that these figures represent the strongest sixth week in a quarter for Tesla China to date. They also represent the highest vehicle registrations for Tesla China so far this Q3 2024. More importantly, the company’s results last week also suggest that Tesla China’s 2024 registrations are down just 1.3% year-over-year.
While Tesla China’s 2024 domestic sales are still lagging behind the company’s 2023 figures, they are seeing some momentum as of late. As per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla China sold 74,117 vehicles wholesale in July 2024, 27,890 of which were exported abroad and 46,227 of which were sold in the domestic auto market. These represented a 4.38% improvement over the 71,007 units that were sold wholesale in June, and a 15.3% increase year-over-year compared to the 64,285 units that were sold wholesale in July 2023.
Tesla China plays a huge role in the company’s overall operations, with Giga Shanghai being its primary vehicle export hub. Considering that CEO Elon Musk has noted that Tesla could exceed its Full-Year 2023 record of selling 1,808,581 vehicles worldwide this year, Tesla China would likely have to keep its foot on the accelerator all the way until the end of 2024.
