If you are waiting for a Tesla Model Y in Canada, you may soon get your vehicle from China instead of California.
As it was broke earlier today on X, Tesla has resumed shipping Model Y’s from Giga Shanghai to Canada.
The change from the US-made Model Y has meant modifying the range estimates on the Tesla site. Also, new Model Y from Giga Shanghai have been added to Tesla’s existing inventory.
If you do have one on order and are awaiting delivery, you will be asked to approve new range estimates as the Chinese Model Y’s have a slightly lower range.
The new range estimates for the Model Y’ is:
- RWD – 394km to 386km
- LR – 497km to 496km
- P – 459km to 449km
In addition to the change in range, there are a few other slight differences between a Shanghai and Fremont Model Y that we might see make their way to Canada.
- An ambient light strip on the dash
- A new material on the dash
- Dark Gemini wheels used to be exclusive to Giga Shanghai, but as of last month those are now standard from Fremont
We have not seen confirmation of these changes through pictures on the Tesla configurator, but we will have to wait and see once vehicles start arriving in Canada to confirm.
Last year, Chinese-made Model Y’s were the norm in Canada. However, after a few months Tesla shifted back to Fremont-made vehicles.
This change comes at an interesting time as Canada is considering EV tariffs targeting the Chinese automotive sector. The tariffs are still under consideration and are in the consultation period until August 1.
It is unknown why Tesla has reversed their plans to ship vehicles out of Fremont. Nor is it clear whether Tesla obtained a waiver or exemption from the proposed Chinese EV tariff before the end of industry consultations.
